Explore our Whitehall MI Inn

The Lewis House, a stately Victorian home in Whitehall MI, sits atop a bluff overlooking White Lake. Built in 1878 by John C. Lewis, and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it stands today much as it did more than a century ago as one of the most impressive Victorian homes in Whitehall.  Historically authentic yet thoughtfully modernized, the house has undergone extensive renovations to restore its late-Victorian grandeur while incorporating the comfort and amenities expected by today’s guests.

Guest rooms in the main house are graciously appointed with spacious private bathrooms, high ceilings and large original windows. The parlor, library, dining room and bistro room of the inn are furnished with quality and comfort in mind, inviting guests to linger throughout the house. From June through October, guests staying in the main house may enjoy a thoughtfully prepared breakfast on Thursday through Sunday mornings, served as a complimentary amenity in the formal dining room or, weather permitting, outdoors on the patio.

In addition to the main house, the guest house offers a private retreat with rustic charm, a fully equipped kitchen, a private entrance, and sweeping views of White Lake – ideal for those seeking the ease and independence of a vacation cottage.

Just up the hill from a miles-long paved rail-to-trail bike path, it’s a short walk to water-view restaurants, neat shops and micro-breweries, a short distance from Lake Michigan and right next door to the historic Playhouse at White Lake. Guests are welcome to enjoy immaculate grounds, stunning lake views, and the quiet elegance of a carefully restored 19th century home and its renovated caretaker’s cottage. Explore the house, discover the history behind The Lewis House and its Hillside Cottage, and begin planning your next Whitehall, MI getaway.

From our Guests: The Stunning Lewis House! My husband and I have come to The Lewis House in Whitehall, Michigan many times. However, over the past two years, we have not made our usual sojourn to visit. So, I decided I needed a little getaway time on my own. I went up for three nights and stayed in the Sunset Room. It was fabulous as always. Debi and Greg are incredible hosts, so thoughtful and I can say over time we have become friends. My room was so comfortable and had a restful time and really felt rejuvenated after my stay. You can’t go wrong when you visit The Lewis House. It is a dream come true in a small part of the planet. The food? Well, each breakfast is just marvelous and well thought out. The whole place is detailed for comfort. My husband and I are planning to come back in the fall together. What a wonderful time.

Inn History

John C. Lewis was one of west Michigan’s most successful businessmen. He married Augusta Covell in 1865 and partnered with her brother in a profitable mill operation. The Lewises built this grand home in 1878. The home remained in the family until 1944 when the ‘Showplace of Whitehall’ was sold to the Hildebrandts who operated it as a 9-room boarding house called Lakeview Rooms. The Hildebrandt family continued to operate Lakeview Rooms until 1976 when the house was bought by the Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp. The arts camp used the house as an arts school and lodging for performers. Ultimately, a new theater and housing were built and the home was listed for sale. In 2009, Greg and Debi Hillebrand bought the home and began a 6 year renovation. The Lewis House opened in 2015 and is proudly listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
